Welcome to the "Historic" Green Cemetery in Deptford, NJ
Robert M. Clare was born on November 5, 1776, in Woodbury, NJ, to Casper Clare and Susannah Patterson. He married Anne Kurz in 1798, and together they had 12 children over 22 years, though only six survived to adulthood. Two of their surviving children are buried in this cemetery, along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.[1]
On March 10, 1814, Robert joined the 16th U.S. Infantry in the companies of Captains George Steele and John Machesney. During his first seven months of service, he saw little action, primarily pursuing British and Indian troops in New York, Vermont, and Canada. This changed on October 22, 1814, at the Battle of Lyon’s Creek, about 15 miles south of Niagara Falls.
Although the specific location is unknown, Robert was awarded a land bounty for his military service. He and Anne lived in Woodbury until her death on April 20, 1860. Robert later moved in with his daughter and son-in-law in Philadelphia, where he passed away at the age of 95. He was laid to rest here in Historic Green Cemetery, surrounded by his family.
